Seeing Yourself Through a New Lens: Self-Worth and the Power of Perception

“Lauren, you wouldn’t worry so much about what people thought about you if you realized how much they actually didn’t.”

Those were the words my grandmother Dolores, one of the wisest women I’ve ever known, used to say to me. And let me tell you—she wasn’t wrong. Dolores helped thousands of women escape toxic relationships with narcissists and alcoholics, and if anyone knew the truth about self-worth, it was her. She had this uncanny way of cutting through the noise and getting to the heart of things.

So, let’s get real for a minute: We spend way too much time stressing over how others see us. But here’s the kicker: Most people are so wrapped up in their own lives, they aren’t thinking about you nearly as much as you think they are.

The real question is, why are you letting other people’s imagined opinions define your self-worth? ✨

The Perception Trap: Who Are You Really?

Let’s call it what it is—half the time, we’re not just worried about how others see us. We’re worried about how we think others see us. Charles Horton Cooley nailed it when he said, “I’m not what you think I am. I’m what I think you think I am.” It’s like we’re walking around with a funhouse mirror in our heads, distorting our own reflection based on assumptions we made up.

Here’s the truth bomb: You are so much more than what people think. Actually, you’re so much more than what you think people think. You were made with a unique design, filled with purpose, and as the Bible reminds us in Genesis 1:27, “God created mankind in His own image.” So, whether you’re feeling yourself today or not, your value is built-in—it’s in your DNA.

Percieving your self worth

Stop Letting Others Write Your Self Worth Story

We live in a world where it feels like everyone’s opinion matters more than our own. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t. God already called you worthy, so why are you letting other people’s assumptions run the show? You wouldn’t hand a stranger the pen to write your life story, so stop handing them the authority to decide your worth.

So how do we break free from the “What will they think?” cycle and start living like the boss we were created to be?

  1. Know Your Value: No one else has what you have. Let that sink in. The talents, the quirks, the personality—you’re one of a kind, and that’s where your value lies. The moment you embrace that is the moment you reclaim your power.

  2. Challenge the Noise: When those thoughts creep in—“What are they thinking about me?”—flip the script. Ask yourself, “What do I know to be true about me?” Hint: It’s that you’re fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

  3. Glow Up, Not Show Up: Invest in yourself not to impress others, but because you’re worth it. Whether it’s a bomb new hairstyle or a self-care Sunday, these things aren’t about validation—they’re about treating yourself with the respect and love you deserve. Because here’s the deal: Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.

When Self-Worth Meets Perception: Own Your Glow

Here’s the truth: Your glow doesn’t come from what others think. It comes from knowing who you are and living it unapologetically. Confidence isn’t about fitting into someone else’s box, and it sure isn’t about playing small. It’s about owning your value, your gifts, your unique vibe, and showing up in the world as the masterpiece you already are.

So, next time you catch yourself wondering what others think, remember: God has already defined your self-worth and given you the sovereignty to believe its truth or not. What do you choose today?
